About MeRepeatedly Gilman's chosen themes of figures in interiors included women. Like Spencer Gore's work, these intimate subjects call to mind the work of the French Intimistes.Gilman painted a number of portraits of his mother and this one demonstrates his increasingly colourful palette and broken touch. In spite of the picture's tiny scale, it is painted with broad, confident brushstrokes which concentrate on the play of light on the sitter.
Gilman had been a friend of Gore since their years at Slade School in London. It was Gore who introduced Gilman to Walter Sickert's circle.
