About MeAlthough Farquharson is best known for his Scottish snow scenes (such as 'Afterglow') he also travelled widely, making several visits to Egypt. The last of these visits was made in 1893, the year this work was painted.Farquharson was attracted by street scenes and was fascinated by the contrasts between the blinding sun and the deep shadows as here, under the archway. His painting of architectural subjects however, did not continue after his last visit to Egypt.
More About Me
This work shows great mastery of light and shadow resulting from the high daytime sun, casting long shadows, and providing great depth and texture to the architecture.
