About MeJoseph Farquharson's family were landed gentry who had occupied the lands of Finzean since the sixteenth century. The estate of Finzean lies on Deeside, to the west of Aberdeen, in the very heartland of Scotland. It is a breathtaking landscape of mountain and moorland, for which the Scottish Highlands are famous. Farquharson made his reputation painting winter scenes. 'Afterglow', painted in the Forest of Birse on the Finzean estate, captures the pink glow in the evening sky and the bluish shadows cast on the snow-covered woodland. As the quiet of evening descends, rabbits make their twilight foray, oblivious to the painter's presence.
