About MeGeorge Leslie Hunter spent his teenage years and early adulthood in the United States where he began his career as an artist. In 1906, when the San Francisco earthquake destroyed his studio and all of his paintings, he returned to his family in Glasgow.

Hunter's still lifes developed along similar lines to those of his friend S.J. Peploe. Objects painted against dark backgrounds, in the tradition of Dutch and French still life, were gradually replaced by lighter compositions executed in brighter, more luminous colours, as can be seen here. His daring use of bright colour, inspired by Post-Impressionist and Fauvist paintings, earned him his position as one of the four Scottish Colourists.
