About MePatrick Nasmyth was the eldest son of the landscape painter Alexander Nasmyth. He worked mainly in London and soon came to be regarded as a painter of the English landscape.

Although the grand edifice of Windsor Castle is sited in the background of this picture, the true subject matter is the rural surrounding. Nasmyth preferred simple scenes and frequently included picturesque elements - such as the peasant figures in this picture, who are shown working by the river.

More About Me
Nasmyth painted with his left hand, after losing the use of his right hand in an accident. He liked simple scenes with Windsor Castle here relegated to the backdrop.
