About MeBessie MacNicol belonged to the first generation of women artists to be allowed a conventional art training. She studied at Glasgow School of Art under the legendary Fra Newbery and in Paris at the Academie Colarossi. She was part of the set of artists who colonised Kirkcudbright and working there she became associated with E.A. Hornel. Under his influence her palette became considerably lighter. Her work is close in spirit to contemporary French painting and sharing the same influences which formed the Scottish Colourists, her work anticipates theirs. 'Autumn' is an example of her favourite subject - a young girl painted under a tree in dappled sunlight.
