About MeThis portrait has traditionally been ascribed as a pendant to Mr Robert Adam. On the basis of the sitters' chair and costumes it has been suggested that Mr Adam's portrait is fifteen years earlier. However, the pictures do make a convincing pair and they share a similar history of ownership. The compositions are alike and the figures are framed by the indeterminate crimson drapery that Raeburn so often used as a background. Raeburn has expertly rendered the rich velvet, satin and organdie of Mrs Adam's costume and also her spirited but slightly quizzical expression.

More About Me
This portrait has traditionally been identified as the partner to another Raeburn, “Robert Adam”, that this Gallery also holds, but the identities of both subjects remain debatable.
