About MeJohn Burr studied alongside McTaggart, Orchardson and Pettie under Robert Scott Lauder, forming part of what has been called the first school of Scottish painters. He achieved moderate success, first exhibiting at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1856 and becoming President of the Royal Society of British Artists. Here the soft pastel shades, in particular the pink and the clearly defined outline bear great similarity to Orchardson's work of the same period. However, his preference was for paintings of cottage life and children, rather that the upper class, historical or fictitious subjects favoured by Orchardson.
More About Me
Burr, part of the "first school of Scottish painters", always preferred scenes of cottage life and children.
