About MeCarte de visite of Dumbarton rock and castle; there are boats in the foreground with a young boy standing on a box and peering over into one on the left hand side. Dumbarton Castle was the stronghold of King David II and his family in 1333 after the Scottish were defeated at the battle of Halidon Hill. The castle is mentioned in folklore, most notably by Geoffrey of Monmouth who suggested that Merlin once stayed there. g.w.wilson no.791a aberdeen
