About MeThis candlestick is an example of motto wares which became popular in the early and mid 20th century as holiday souvenirs. The red earthenware body is covered with cream slip and has a painted thistle design and the motto 'Guid nicht an joy be wi ye' has been scratched into the slip, revealing the red clay beneath. In spite of its Scottish subject matter the candlestick was manufactured in Devon by the Longpark Pottery Co. Motto ware was the principal commodity produced by this Torquay company. These small souvenir type wares featured naïve patterns of cottages and other shapes and wares intended for Ireland bore a shamrock whilst those for Scotland featured a thistle. The company was in existence between 1903 and 1957.
