About MeThis snowy scene - a view of the Akerselven River in Norway - was purchased from the Scottish landscape artist Horatio McCulloch. Frits Thaulow moved to Paris in the 1870s and there came under the influence of the Barbizon School artists, especially Corot and Daubigny and soon adopted the tonality of their work. The cool grey light of their paintings was admirably suited to the Norwegian landscape and Thaulow's paintings were soon gaining high prices both in Europe and also in the United States, where his perfectly observed realism was greatly admired.

Although Thaulow specialised in Norwegian snow scenes such as this, he spent much of his life in Dieppe, where he was able to mix with many French and British artists. He was the brother-in-law of Paul Gauguin.
