About MeBetween 1935 and 1945 Spencer went through tremendous financial difficulties as he struggled to support two wives and two children. As a result, he painted many landscapes and gardens in a bid to settle his debts. Until recently, these paintings had been overlooked in favour of his more visionary subjects. In this work Spencer was obviously attracted by the fanciful shapes of the pruned trees and has focused his attention on the rich foliage of the walled garden.

Does this painting make you wonder what the rest of the garden looked like?
