One of Fintray's ministers in the 18th century was Thomas Reid who became Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow University and who, as founder of the 'common sense' school of philosophy, was a leading figure in the Scottish Enlightenment.
Towards the end of the same century another of Fintray's ministers, Dr Sam Copland, was informing readers of the Statistical Account of Scotland about the "great inundation" with which the River Don flooded part of his parish in1768. Such a description might well be equally appropriate today.
