About MeSquare token, probably of local manufacture, with border and inscribed on one side only: Mariners / 1841 / ChurchThis congregation, consisting, as might be expected, mainly of seafaring people, was established in about 1839 and met in a building in Sugarhouse Lane. A few years afterwards it moved to a new church in Commerce Street near the harbour.
In an attempt to boost dwindling attendances by giving the church a wider appeal, the name `Mariners' was dropped in the 1880s. The building then became Commerce Street United Free Church.
