About MeA locally-made token, almost square in shape, with the name and date in irregular characters displayed within a narrow border. It is inscribed on one side only thus: Peterculter / 1787The earliest church at Peterculter, seven miles west of Aberdeen, dated from about 1200; it was dedicated to St Peter and belonged to the Abbey of Kelso. A new church was constructed in 1799 on the same site close to the River Dee. It is now the St Peter's Church Heritage Centre.
In 1778 when the communion token was issued the minister was The Rev. George Mark, a native of Banff. Mr Mark was removed from his previous charge at Kirkhill, near Inverness, because of his lack of ability to communicate with his mainly Gaelic-speaking congregation.
