Reid was primarily a painter of portraits and landscape; he painted both Macdonald and his wife and many other artist's portraits in the Macdonald collection. Perhaps emulating the French painter, Henri Fantin-Latour, he also painted flower-pieces. "Marsh marigolds" was painted in 1878. These golden flowers are much larger than the buttercup, which has strayed into the bunch at the upper right. They grow in marshy places in early summer.
The distinctive pot with the beautiful turquoise glaze is likely to have been a contemporary piece. The contrast between the slow curves of the base and the angular elbow-like handles resembles the Electro-plated teapots and sugar bowls being designed during the 1870s by the Glasgow designer, Christopher Dresser.
