About MeAlthough the Martin Brothers are best known for their models of grotesque birds and animals, most of their output was vases, jugs and jars. This stoneware vase, decorated with flying insects reveals the Martin Bothers' awareness of Japanese art and demonstrates the link between Gothic and Japanese disciplines that were at the forefront of the Aesthetic artist's mind. These ideas gave birth to the Art Pottery movement in Europe, a tradition that continues to this day in the form of Studio Pottery. The vase also demonstrates a move of interest away from fine porcelain wares towards the more domestic pottery produced by Japanese craftsman.
