About MeAn earthenware highly textural gourd shaped vase which is lightly ribbed enhancing the gourd shape with a bulbous neck and everted rim. It is decorated with a beautiful turquoise and blue streaked and crackled glaze which provides depth and contrast with the underlying rich pinky terracotta.
Pilkington's began manufacturing tiles in 1893 at Clifton, Manchester, under the guidance of William Burton, a young chemist who had previously worked for Josiah Wedgwood. They began to produce a range of decorative pottery around 1903 using the new glazes which had been developed for tile production. This range was called Lancastrian Pottery. Opalescent and then lustre glazes were developed, and a new team of designers was engaged.
