About MeMadge Mitchell trained at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen and subsequently in Paris under Henri L'hote, later returning to Gray's as a teacher of painting. Her commissioned work was mostly portraits, both presentation and private.

Watercolour lends itself well for child studies where quick brushwork can capture their sudden movements and fleeting expressions. This tender study of a sleeping baby avoids the problem of hyperactivity yet still evinces something of the infant's individuality.
