About MeSeveral boats are lying at anchor along the canal, while birds circle overhead. Whilst Jacob Maris was certainly influenced by his French and German contemporaries, this painting clearly recalls the paintings of Dutch 17th century artists. Their landscapes also depicted such typical scenes of rustic workers and canals and are often characterised by the vast skies that a flat landscape provides.
More About Me
Maris was a member of the Hague School, which took inspiration from the Dutch "Golden Age" of the 17th century. The muted colour palettes favoured by these artists led to them being nicknamed the "Grey School."
