About MeWilliam Quiller Orchardson was one of the pupils of Robert Scott Lauder. He studied in Edinburgh under Lauder but later made his career in London where he achieved fame, exhibiting numerous paintings at the Royal Academy. Orchardson's work is distinguished by his preference for subdued tonalities and his distinctive use of small, dry brushstrokes.

The sitter for this painting was the artist's daughter Hilda who in 1930 wrote a biography of her father.
