In 1727 the Royal Bank of Scotland was established by Charter and immediately entered into a bitter rivalry with the Bank of Scotland. As well as the usual one-pound notes the Royal Bank, from time to time, issued notes of one guinea (21 shillings). The first of these appeared in 1758.
Despite its importance the Royal Bank did not attempt to create a nation-wide network of branches; its interests were confined to Edinburgh and central Scotland although it did take over the Dundee Banking Company in 1844. In north-east Scotland the Royal Bank only became established in the late 20th century by which time it had merged with the National Commercial Bank.
