On 1st May 1908 the Aberdeen Town and County Bank merged with its local rival the North of Scotland Bank. Initially the notes of both banks continued to circulate after being overprinted with the new company's verbose title "The North of Scotland and Town and County Bank Limited".
Towards the end of the 19th century the two remaining local Aberdeen banks began to realise that they were individually too small in scale to provide the facilities required by their customers. There was also some overlap of their branch networks which was proving uneconomic. Financially as well as administratively amalgamation made sense.
