About MeAngus Neil lived in the village of Catterline in the 1960s. Shellshocked in World War II - and further traumatised by the death of his friend and mentor Joan Eardley in 1963 - Neil was a talented but disturbed man, who spent his latter years in psychiatric care.

As was frequently the case, Neil felt dissatisfied with this painting. A friend recounted that Joan Eardley took his brush and painted the broad yellow streak at the lower right. This touch gives additional vibrancy and expertly complements the purple tones of the intermediate background.
