About MeBorn the son of an Aberdeen carver and gilder, Sir John Steell studied in Rome and at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. He became one of the most talented and successful sculptors that Scotland has produced.

This small bust is a fine example from Steell's early period, when his sculptures were idealised in mood and theme. The style of the head holds classical connotations, yet there is an intimate quality and quietly sentimental aspect to it. William Leigh Canning Sinclair was the second son of Alexander Earl of Caithness. He died aged eight years and three months.
