About MeAn engraver and painter of landscapes and mythological scenes, Edward Calvert was born in Appledore in Devon. After a spell in the Navy, Calvert studied art at Plymouth, where he studied under James Ball and Ambrose Johns, a highly regarded local landscape painter. He then moved to London, studying at the Royal Academy Schools and meeting William Blake, under whose influence he quickly fell. His early visionary work was greatly inspired by Blake and he became a member of the Blake-influenced group known as 'The Ancients', which met at Samuel Palmer's home in Shoreham, Kent.
He was a skilled wood engraver and today his woodcuts, such as "The Brook", are better known than his paintings.
