About MePhilomena Pretsell's pots are built from slabs of clay which have been stretched on a plaster slab. When cut to shape, the clay is decorated with layers of coloured slips (liquid clay), or painted with stains and impressed with wooden printing blocks. When it is no longer wet to the touch, the clay is folded into the shapes that form mugs, teapots, dishes and other functional pieces. Tassels, roses or braiding are added. Once the pots have been fired and glazed, ceramic transfers are added. By decorating the slab first, the clay can be treated like a piece of fabric and the pattern and form fall naturally into place when assembled.
Born in Dublin in 1951, Philomena Pretsell trained in Edinburgh in 1987 as a mature student.

More About Me

A skeuomorph is an object that copies elements of similar items when made from other materials. Is there anything about this pitcher that fits this definition?
