James Bruce Duncan

New Deer, Aberdeenshire, 1848 - 1917
About MeAround 1902, James Bruce Duncan started to compile Scotland’s largest and most important manuscript collection of folk songs and ballads drawn from oral tradition. James was an outstanding musicologist from a noted singing family. Born in New Deer he studied philosophy at the University of Aberdeen and went on to read divinity in Edinburgh and Leipzig. An academic high-flyer, he taught at the University of Aberdeen, where he met Gavin Greig. Together they collected and recorded nearly 2,000 songs unique to North-East Scotland. Today the distinctive voice of the North-East’s musical tradition continues to thrive, largely thanks to the pair’s meticulous work.
