Gavin Greig

Newmachar, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, 1856 - 1914
About MeGavin Greig was a playwright, poet and tireless champion of the North-East’s culture of folksong. Long after his death, Gavin’s play Mains’s Wooin’ is still widely performed and folk singers around the world continue to honour the man who saved so many of Scotland’s folk songs from extinction.

Born in Newmachar, Aberdeenshire, Gavin attended the University of Aberdeen. He wrote a weekly column in the local Buchan Observer called ‘Ballad Corner’ where he championed the songs and singers of the North-East. This passion for folksong led Gavin to team up with James Bruce Duncan, and together they set out to document the musical traditions of North-East Scotland.
