DescriptionExcavation, comprising three trenches, was carried out by Aberdeen City Council Archaeological Unit in 2003 within a proposed development area. Trench 1 was excavated to a depth of 3m (c 15.90m OD) through demolition rubble consisting of large granite blocks and sand. Collapse of the trench edges did not allow the excavation of this trench to be completed. A brick inspection trap for a water or sewerage system was seen at the north end of this trench but was not disturbed. Three granite rubble wall foundations were excavated in Trench 2. The corner of a building is represented by two walls. In the north- east corner of the trench, subsoil was reached at a depth of c 18.10m OD. The walls were probably the remains of the tenements on the east side of Lodge Walk, possibly those seen on the 1789 map. In Trench 3 was excavated at the north of the available area. A large wall, AG, was 1m wide and was constructed of large granite blocks. It was probably the wall of one of the buildings visible on the 1901 Ordnance Survey map. At the west end of the trench, a tarmac surface had been laid on stones and brick. This earlier tarmac surface had been covered with 0.7m of hardcore in preparation for the tarmac currently surfacing the area. In the centre of the trench, undisturbed subsoil was seen at 0.7m below the car park surface (c 18.15m OD). The earliest activity uncovered during this assessment were the wall foundations in Trench 2 which may date to the later 18th century. The features in Trench 1 probably date to the late 19th century. The rubble in Trench 1 probably came from the demolition in the mid- 20th century of late 19th-century buildings into their cellars.Location InfoNational Grid Reference: NJ 9440 0640
