HistoryFlour Merchant and Patron of the Arts. Educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and Marischal College he became an innovative flour miller and corn merchant. He held the Directorship of the North of Scotland Bank and Aberdeen Jute Company, became President of the British and Irish Association of Millers in 1888 and was Vice-Consul for Sweden and Norway. White was awarded an honorary LLD from Aberdeen University in 1886. He is also remembered as a pioneer amateur photographer and sponsor of Aberdeen Art Gallery. He was also an influential writer on art, a collector of innovative contemporary art and patron to many young artists whose careers flourished as a result.
