About MeThe sitter is Rhoda Zhou (Mrs Chou Ting-hsu (Chiu Teng-hiok). She and her husband, who was also an artist, had recently arrived in London from Peking. Rhoda delivers a penetrating stare to the onlooker, drawing us into her exotic world. The strong central focus of the composition is further enhanced by the steep perspective of the black lacquer table to the right, the lines of which lead the eye up to Rhoda's face.

As a backdrop James McBey employs a stylised Chinese landscape, the subtle colours of which contrast very effectively with the red dress, yellow book and green textile on which Rhoda rests her arm.

Adopted by Ken Rothnie.
