A few years before she met James McBey, Marguerite Loeb had met and fallen in love with the Austrian Expressionist Oskar Kokoschka. They had intended to marry but she was below the age of consent and her father had forbidden the match.
Nevertheless they stayed in touch and he presented her with several examples of his work, including this still life. Such paintings give a clear indication of how Kokoschka's watercolour style, rather than that of James McBey, was the inspiration for her when she took up painting in watercolour herself many years later.
