30/11/1870:
Report of Charles Sanders, Master of the Brig ALBERT H. LOCKE, of and from Littlehampton, 222 tons, for Sunderland (ballast) (as before reported):—Left Littlehampton Nov. 12. Proceeded, and on 15th, at 9 45 p.m., weather clear, wind N.W., fresh, ship being of Whitby, the light bearing N.W. W., about seven miles, with her head N.N.E., close-hauled, [...] going about four knots, I was the cabin on deck, when I heard the Mate say, Master, come up; here is ship close board of us.” I was on deck in half a minute, but the ship struck before I got out of the door. Our lights wore the best composite candles and were burning brightly. Our stem went into her starboard bow, just before the fore rigging, and our bead stem and jibboom were carried away, with other damage. The vessel was the brig GENERAL HAVELOCK, of Aberdeen. She rebounded from us. We backed our yards, and the ship went clear. They hailed us, saying the ship was sinking, upon which sent our boat to her; but seven of their Crew had got into their own boat. Our boat picked up the Captain, who was floating on a spar, the vessel having just gone down. The Master told us that one man was missing.
