About MeBorn in Johannesburg in 1897 Edward Wolfe moved to London in 1916 where he enrolled at the Slade School of Art. There he met Roger Fry and started working at the Omega Workshop, which was then at its creative peak.In 1918 Wolfe contributed work to the first exhibition of the London Group and was also a member of the 'Bloomsbury Group'.
Introduced to the work of Matisse in 1919 Wolfe was one of the first British artists to become attracted to and influenced by Matisse and Modigliani, and became known as 'England's Matisse'. This influence is particlarly clear in this self portrait.
