About MeThis painting is a typical example of French academic art of the mid 19th century. The revival of interest in classical art and architecture is evident here in the way in which Aubert has transformed a simple courting scene into an imagined view of Ancient Greece or Rome.

The painting was bought by the Aberdeen collector Alexander Macdonald and was included in the exhibition that he and his friends organised in 1873 which took place in the newly built Town House and which prefigured the setting up of Aberdeen Art Gallery.
