About MeThis dish was thrown on the potter's wheel as a circle and then reshaped by taking out a leaf-shaped piece of clay and pressing the sides together to form an oval dish.
The decoration was created using trailed white slip on wet black slip and comprises three stripes across the centre and two stripes on either side. This dish has a galena (lead) glaze.
It was fairly common practice for Elijah Comfort to throw these dishes, although most do not carry his EC mark. Michael Cardew decorated them with a creamy liquid clay known as slip and often applied his own MC mark, alongside WP for Winchcombe Pottery. Comfort and Cardew were joined in 1936 by Ray Finch who eventually took over Winchcombe Pottery. First as manager after Cardew returned to Cornwall three years later and then buying the business in 1946 .
