About MeOne of a set of six side plates glazed in a blue "Dalemain" ash with bands of trailed and feather combed white slip.

Edward Hughes frequently incorporated wood ash, obtained from local hardwoods, in his glazes. When fired at a high temprature the glazes achieved rich mottled colours, reflecting the Cumbrian landscape where Hughes lived and worked. He named his glazes after their origin, which in this instance was the fireplace at Dalemain, the country house near Ullswater.
