About MeStoneware beer tankard with green chun (opalescent) glaze over black slip. the tankard is decorated with a sgraffito (scratched) geometric pattern of ovals and crosses within bands of double lines.
Ladi Kwali joined the Abuja Pottery Training Centre in 1954 as its first female potter, initially as a student and then a teacher. She learnt wheel-throwing from Michael Cardew and combined this technique with the indigenous method of coiling clay to build her pots by hand. She was one of the first Nigerian potters to gain an international recognition due to the high quality of her work and her ability to combine successfully traditional techniques and decorative motifs with western studio pottery.
