About MePorcelain small globular vase with short neck. It is glazed in a dark brown tenmoku glaze with a thin reddish-brown line around the rim.The vase is decorated with four splashes of irridescent rust brown ilmenite, spaced evenly around the body to create a repeating pattern. The ilmenite has been applied over the tenmoku with the potter's thumb and pulled down to create a splash.
Ilmenite is a titanium iron-oxide mineral which creates an irridescent brown glaze when fired in a reduction kiln.
Tenmoku is a Japanese term for a type of glaze which originated in East Asia. It is usually a lustrous black or as in this example, a dark treacle-brown.
