About MeThis small plate is glazed in a red-brown iron glaze and a mottled pale blue and brown wood ash glaze through which an off-white slip has been trailed in a criss-cross pattern to create squares, some of which have dots of slip glaze.

Edward Hughes frequently incorporated wood ash, obtained from local hardwoods, in his glazes. When fired at a high temprature the glazes achieved rich mottled colours, reflecting the Cumbrian landscape where Hughes lived and worked.
