About MeS.J. Peploe and J.D. Fergusson both trained in Paris in the 1890s. Peploe's admiration for the restrained and elegant art of Velasquez and Edouard Manet is clearly evident in his work at this time. These paintings usually have a dark background, which is set off with lighter toned objects in the foreground. The emphasis is on tone rather than colour, with sparkling highlights shining out from the dark.

More About Me
Peploe's admiration for the restrained elegant art of Velasquez and Manet shows here in the dark ground with lighter objects in front, the whole emphasising tone rather than colour
