About MeThe progress of watercolour painting can be traced from Sandby, through Cozens to Girtin and Turner. The medium was considered perfectly suited to rendering the moistness of the English (and Scottish) atmosphere. Around 1800 - when this work was made - watercolour painting underwent a significant change. It had formerly been described as 'tinted drawing' in which colour is secondary to line, but artists such as Girtin dispensed with the linear aspect and began to handle light and atmosphere through colour.
More About Me
Girton's work was much admired by his friend, JMW Turner, who said of his death at age 27: "Had Tom Girtin lived, I would have starved".
