About MeThis token is inscribed on both sides. On one side the letters SP ABD (for South Parish, Aberdeen) appear along with a rather basic decoration in the form of three towers; on the other the inscription reads: South Parish Erected 1828.The South Parish began as a branch of the Relief Church in the 1870s and did not join the Church of Scotland until 1791. At the latter date it had the status of a Chapel of Ease, i.e a place at which people might `easily' or convenientlly worship but which was not an actual parish church.
Communion tokens were a means of ensuring that only those entitled to do so could attend the communion service. Tokens were in regular use from the late 17th to the early 20th century and were issued by most Protestant churches in Scotland.
