The British Linen Bank evolved out of the British Linen Company which was established in Edinburgh in 1746 to coordinate all aspects of linen manufacture. Twenty years later the transformation of the company into a bank was well under way.
Even before it became a bank the British Linen Company had a strong presence in north-east Scotland with offices in several towns. This presence was maintained and developed so that British Linen branches were very much part of the area's banking scene until 1971 when amalgamation with the Bank of Scotland took place.
