About MeThis style of British Linen note was introduced as early as 1915 and was a development of an even earlier design. For the first time, notes were printed on both sides as recommended for security reasons by the printing firm of Waterlow and Sons who were also responsible for the blue and orange overlay on the obverse of the notes. The Linen Bank's coat of arms and its seal are also included in the design.

The British Linen Bank evolved out of the British Linen Company which was established in Edinburgh in 1746 to coordinate all aspects of linen manufacture. Twenty years later the transformation of the company into a bank was well under way.

Even before it became a bank the British Linen Company had a strong presence in north-east Scotland with offices in several towns. This presence was maintained and developed so that British Linen branches were very much part of the area's banking scene until 1971 when amalgamation with the Bank of Scotland took place.
