About MeMatthew Smith made his highly individualistic contribution to 20th century British painting through his enduring and intensifying commitment to colour. He used thick paint decoratively and sensuously to define form and volume in his nudes, landscapes and still lifes.Matthew Smith spent extended periods in France and his landscapes in particular reveal a debt to the art of Paul Cézanne. In this painting Smith transforms the landscape of his birthplace into a rich and vibrant exercise in colour, recalling his own recent studies of the Provencal mountain Cézanne had painted numerous times: Mont Sainte-Victoire.
