Originally authorised to troops who had fought against the mutineers it was later extended to all who had borne arms so that a grand total of 290,000 examples were issued. Five bars were awarded of which the Defence of Lucknow (29th June-25th September) is the most famous.
The recipient of the medal served in the 84th (Yorks. & Lancs.) Regiment which was formed in 1793 and disbanded in 1968.
