About MeThis dress was designed by Norman Young of London and was sold by Helen Hunter in Aberdeen.Worn with a headdress and veil, the white woven satin dress features a repeated paisley style motif throughout, boat neck, tight-fitting full-length sleeves with a point at the cuff, fitted bodice and full skirt' which forms a train at the back.
Despite social upheaval and changes in fashion in the 1960s, sometimes brides still chose more traditional wedding dresses, like this one. In choosing this design, the bride may have taken inspiration from Katharine Worsley, who married Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, in June 1961. She wore a dress of a similar style, designed by John Cavanagh.
The donor, Peggy Walker, spent her early childhood in the Aberdeenshire countryside until her family moved into central Aberdeen. She taught dressmaking and costume design at the Northern College of Education in Aberdeen. She was an expert on historical costume and amassed a large collection that was donated to Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums as the Peggy Walker Gift.
