About MeIn this portrait of his wife, Douglas Strachan employs fluid, ‘bravura’ brushwork to describe the wispy fabric of the sitter’s dress. The soft lines of her costume are expressive of her pale, delicate femininity. Mrs Strachan is shown in a domestic interior – perhaps her parlour – with a shadowy reflection in the looking glass behind her. The fan that she holds in her lap reflects the taste for Japonisme prevalent at the time.ADOPT AN ARTWORK. This artwork is available for Adoption. More About Me
The decorated fan reflects the fashion for collecting Japanese art, following the opening of trade with the country in the 1850s. How would you accessorise for a portrait of yourself?
