About MeThe painting was a response to the self styled 'Brit Art' domination of British Culture at the end of the twentieth century - a trend towards high concept/ all surface marketing of art, typified by the likes if Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin.

The Patrick Bateman of the paintings title is the main character in Bret Easton Ellis' consumerist satire, 'American Psycho'. The character sums himself and to some degree, the era, as "Some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me. Only an entity -- something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze.. And you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours... And may be you can even sense our life styles are probably comparable, I simply am not there."
